Installation
Important: Read all installation notes pertaining to your particular type of installation before starting the job. Avoid costly mistakes!
Installation Tips
- If system is to carry corrosive solutions, refer to the "Sealants" section before installation or contact your PolyDrain dealer for more information.
- Trench excavation must allow for the same thickness as the adjacent floor slab or pavement to be placed under and alongside the PolyDrain channel system. In all cases, the thickness of concrete must be a minimum of 4" thick and of the same strength and reinforcement as that of the surrounding floor slab or pavement.
- If the system is to be installed in a structural or reinforced thick slab, follow the designer or structural engineer's recommendations for concrete and steel requirements.
- The PolyDrain channels must not be used as an expansion joint.
- PolyDrain systems installed in asphalt pavement require the same concrete specifications as described above.
- Lay out the PolyDrain channels (in order of installation) parallel to the trench excavation prior to installation. Consult construction plans or shop drawings for correct numerical sequence.
- Make pipe connections and set catch basins prior to channel installation.
- Begin installation at outlet or discharge end of each run and work backwards (upstream). Lay each side of every channel has an arrow indicating the direction of flow.
- Prior to concreting, place 3/4" thick by 4-15/16" wide plywood strips or grates covered in plastic in the channel grate lip. This helps maintain channel alignment and prevents concrete from spilling in the channel.
- If grates are used for channel alignment, place 1/16" thick shims between edge of grates and channels to prevent grate binding after concrete placement. Shims are not required if frames are used.
- Frame and grate designed to fit ON TOP of the PolyDrain channel. The additional 1-3/16" (30mm) height should be taken into account when setting the channels to insure the desired finish slab elevation will be equal to the top of the overlay frame or grating. The end of the frame should align with the end of the channel.
- Standard practices to prevent problems caused by cold joint should be followed.
Safety
- When sawing or grinding sections of polymer concrete channel, wear gloves, protective eyeglasses and respirator mask. Avoid breathing the airborne silica particles (created when sawing) as it may be harmful to your health.
- Protective eyeglasses or goggles should also be worn when drilling or chiseling.
